Top 50 IndieGame Kickstarter Campaigns of 2020 - 2nd Quarter

Projects really started to pick up this quarter, so it will be interesting to see if this happens every year. 18 projects blew me away, 18 projects showed me the exceptional potential they have.

From those, 5 have been released already onto Steam as Early Access titles (Swords'n'Magic and stuff, There Was A Dream, Vibrant Venture, Songs of Syx, Bake'n'Switch), and 8 have playable demos. I have a lot to discuss here, so let us get started.

APRIL

Swords'n'Magic and Stuff

I am not much of one to play Multiplayer RPGs, but... look at the cute designs!

Seriously though, I have been following the development for quite some time on Youtube through the Devlogs that are posted regularly. Communication with your fanbase is crucial and I can only see this game going from strength to strength.

There Was A Dream

You are the chosen one, but not in a stereotypical way. This time you have the choice, to use your powers to create dreams or turn them into nightmares.

As you explore other dreams in this open world, your actions have consequences.

Along your travels, you will also be accompanied by a cute little cat. Don't disappoint him!

Sea of Stars

Easily one of my most anticipated titles on this list, for multiple reasons. Firstly... They made The Messenger! An incredibly fun ninja platformer with great ideas. Now they are back, with breathtaking art, and an ambitious RPG project that looks to deliver everything it promises.

One look at the Kickstarter campaign and the large amount raised will make sense.

Chinatown Detective Agency

I have never played a game that required me to open Google and do some real-world research. That alone blew my mind, and I am excited to see what else the full game holds. We don't need detective games with highlighted clues, and 'doubt' prompts, we need more of this.

I need to feel like a real detective.

GameDec

2020 was a year to get excited about the Cyberpunk genre, many games, films, and stories took inspiration, and this is one of them that has done it remarkably well. The art alone conjures feelings of wonder and a world that will be delightful to explore while wearing your detective hat.

Bring on the Cyberpunk era!

Vibrant Venture

Not every game must be doom and gloom, with a difficulty to make you break controllers, sometimes, all you need a colourful platformer with vibrant characters.

There have been fascinating updates to the level editor, such as creating your own pets that follow you, which you can share on Steam Workshop.

MAY

Fata Deum

There's a reason we haven't had many games in the God Genre, it is difficult to get it right. I won't sugarcoat it, Fata Deum is an ambitious project, but what I have played during the campaign is promising, and I have faith that they will deliver a great title.

If the estimated release is anything to go by, we should be finding out soon.

Songs Of Syx

It is an EPIC city builder, not any old normal city builder. You may start small, but eventually, you can grow your city into 30,000 inhabitants and have battles just as large.

What makes this even more incredible and mind-blowing is to the knowledge that Songs of Syx is a one-man project.

A massive accomplishment so play it now!

Sword Of The Necromancer

So excited for the release of such a beautiful game. Strong comparisons with Zelda get thrown around, but they have been able to turn it into their own and create a new world with necromancy.

You are the wielder of a great powerful sword that brings enemies back to life, to serve your every whim. Let's raise hell!

Chroma: Bloom and Blight

I see many card games every month, come and go, all making the same promises. Chroma stood out for me and looks promising, so I am hoping it delivers.

Their ethos of free cards and packs, whilst hosting cash tournaments is ambitious, and if it succeeds, they can go a long way.

Do we need more competitive card games? Why not.

Weaving Tides

You can never go wrong with dragons, even if the mother betrays us and turns into a homicidal maniac... the dragons are still in our hearts.

The dragons here are softer and cuddlier, quite literally, as they are made of carpet. Such a wholesome idea. You can't help but smile, as you weave in and out to solve the puzzles.

JUNE

Cleo: A Pirates Tale

What a year for solo developers!

Here is another talented dev, making us a beautiful Pixel Art game. Lucas Arts is cited as one of the inspirations, and I have to agree, I can see it shining through.

Upon finding a Pirate Journal, Cleo quits being a barmaid and starts her adventure.

The Treasure of Eternal Memory awaits!

Black Book

Welcome to the enticing world of Slavic Folktales!

As a witch travel the land performing exorcisms and send out your demonic flock to do your bidding.

If the game becomes too much, you can relax with the encyclopedia (I will, without a doubt, be devouring that encyclopedia)

Bake'n'Switch

Full of adorable dough creatures, brilliantly bad puns and big boss fights.

Trust me bad puns are the way to my heart. The dough designs are fantastic, both cute and creative.

If that hasn't turned you away yet, check out this tasty party brawler and join the Doughvolution!

Vernal Edge

Adventure through the sky in an airship, fighting strange creatures, searching for treasure and uncovering stories and secrets that the islands hold.

The combat looks and feels satisfying with a heavy focus on combos and stringing attacks.

Not available to wishlist on Steam yet, but looking forward to when it does.

Lords of Exile

Maybe it's my love for IndieGames, but projects that harken to my childhood of 8-Bit, have my respect.

Nostalgia aside, what we have here is a bloody world (he re-iterates several times in the description) full of creatures of darkness, lots of black and red... basically, get your heavy metal music ready.

The Last Faith

Here is a freakishly horrific boss. Heres another. You want more? Have all the bosses and monsters!

Go crazy in a Symphony of the Night inspired night of killing, puzzling and just being cool. Castlevania is a great inspiration, no denying it, but The Last Faith can stand on its own. This is a world I am eager to explore.

Inkulinati

In the world of 'Medieval memes' there were armies of snails, rabbits and donkeys. Seems doodling in the margins has been an age-old tradition for centuries. Lead your bestiary into battle and watch the illustrated menagerie leap from the old tomes!

Onward to victory!
